"Family Court" is where parenting, support, property and other family-law disputes are decided when spouses or partners can't resolve them on their own or through an agreement. In Ontario, family matters are heard in the Ontario Court of Justice, the Superior Court of Justice, or the Family Court branch of the Superior Court, depending on where you live and what issues are involved — see which court handles your case.

A family court case generally moves through a series of stages: starting or responding to an application, exchanging financial disclosure, one or more conferences aimed at narrowing or resolving issues, possible motions for urgent or interim relief, and — if nothing settles — a trial. Most cases resolve before trial, often at or after a conference or through negotiation alongside the court process. The questions below walk through each stage in the order most cases actually experience them; each links to a fuller guide on that specific step.
